The Calling Shell
Project Summery
My senior project goal is to produce a 3-minute animation entitled; “The Calling Shell” about a young girl who finds herself trapped in a terrifying world inside an enchanted seashell.
Synopsis
“ The Calling Shell,” by Allegra Cheung:
“ A young girl collecting seashells finds a mysterious shell filled with the voices of children, destroying the tiny crab guarding the shell she listens to the voices only to be drawn into the horrific world within.”
Project Description
“The Calling Shell” is a fable about children, meant for adults. The intension of the film is to reflect how even when we make mistakes we so often never learn our lessons. The film is mostly ment to entertain viewers. I wish to create a world that audiences are drawn into. I plan to use dark and detailed imagery to create an alter world of fantasy.
Visual Treatment
The Calling Shell will we created using cgi composited with 2D. Characters will be modelled and animated using 3D software. The background will comprised of many layers of 2d drawings and animated to create an effect similar to cut-out animation.
Sound Treatment
The soundtrack will be narrative, the story will be driven by the music. Sfx will be used but no dialogue.
Director's Bio
Allegra Cheung, is a senior animation student at Emily Carr University. She grew up on Vancouver Island and moved to Vancouver to attend University. Artist Statement
Animation is an extremely laborious and often tedious pursuit. It involves those who do it to spend hours hunched over a desk, or in my case a computer screen, watching progress bars and fiddling endlessly to get the movement just right.
So why on earth do I do animation? Heaven knows there are far easier professions. What draws me to the medium of animation is the simple thrill of making things come to life. I cannot describe the butterflies I get watching a character I created move on screen. Somehow that one moment makes up for all the days spend toiling away. In fact, the moment is made sweeter because I know the effort that went into creating it.
My work in 3D animation has come about gradually through my experimentations with traditional hand-drawn and stop-motion animation. I found I gravitated strongly to stop-motion or puppet animation, from here my tradition into 3D was natural. This is because the process of moving characters is in 3D is similar to stop-motion animation. I like to think of myself as a master puppeteer! I am in control of my character and of its world.
